Assessment of the environmental impact of the Rivne NPP industrial site

At the beginning of 2018 NT-Engineering LLC became the winner in the tender procedures and successfully executes the order of NNEGC "Energoatom" for the separated subdivision "Rivne NPP" (SS "Rivne NPP") regarding the environmental impact assessment of the Rivne NPP site. The relevant agreement for the execution of this order was signed on March 27, 2018.

The work is carried out in order to make an assessment of the environmental impact of the operation of the Rivne NPP as an operating nuclear power plant on the basis of environmental protection measures, the long-term results of monitoring the objects of the environment and comparing the state of the environment around the nuclear power plant before the beginning of its operation and during operation of power units (taking into account available materials of the assessment of the environmental impact of the unit number 4 of the Rivne NPP) and the forecast of expected levels of exposure during the subsequent operation of the mentioned units.

The basis for carrying out the above mentioned works is the Energy Strategy of Ukraine for the period up to 2030, approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated July 24, 2013, No. 1071-р., Strategic Plan for the Development of the State Enterprise "National Atomic Energy Generating Company" Energoatom "for 2017-2021, Decision VI / 2 of the Sixth Meeting of the Parties to the Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context (EPPO Convention), Minutes of the meeting of the Interdepartmental Coordination Council (ICD) on the implementation of the Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in Ukraine Environment in a Transboundary Context (ESPO Convention) dated December 15, 2016, Letter from NNEGC "Energoatom" No. 3313/18 dated March 7, 2017, Letter from the NNEGC "Energoatom" No. 13391/18 dated 09/28/2017.

The object, the environmental impact assessment of which is being investigated, includes operating power units, facilities included in the technological complex located on the industrial site of the Rivne NPP, as well as other objects within the energy complex in the area of sanitary-protective zone and the observation zone of the nuclear power plant.Within the framework of the work, information, materials and the data necessary for the development of materials for environmental impact assessment are collected. These are collection and analysis of data on the types and amount of expected waste, emissions (discharges), water pollution, air, soil and subsoil, noise, vibration, light, thermal and radiation pollution, as well as radiation arising from the implementation of the planned activity, etc.

The priority of protecting people and the environment from the negative effects of ionizing radiation and ensuring the safety of nuclear energy is one of the main principles of state policy in the field of nuclear energy and radiation protection in Ukraine. The purpose of the environmental impact assessment of the Rivne NPP is to prove that the Rivne NPP has no negative impact on the environment and population and will not have a negative impact on adjacent territories, including neighboring countries, in the event of severe accidents.

The advantages of nuclear energy to the energy of other types is the high calorific value of nuclear fuel (2 million times more than oil and 3 million times more than coal), better economic performance, and less pollution of the environment. In addition, during the operation of the nuclear reactor there is no combustion reaction, which is used to maintain oxygen, which is burned to other types of energy 5 times more than it is consumed by all living beings. In addition, stocks of raw materials for the production of nuclear fuel are about 20 times higher than the stocks of organic fuels of all kinds.

Nuclear power is a reliable source of energy supply and plays a leading role in ensuring the energy needs of Ukraine. A positive assessment of the impact on human beings and the environment of the Rivne NPP will serve as an example to confirm the safety of the use of nuclear power in Ukraine.
