Successful removal of «legacy» radioactive waste by “NT-Engineering”
The company "NT-Engineering" has completed the stage of extraction and transportation of «legacy» radioactive waste left over from the Soviet Union times from the landfill at the «Tsybuleve» facility of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. The extracted radioactive waste was transferred to storage at the «Buryakivka» RWDP in the Exclusion Zone.
In May 2019, NT-Engineering LLC started the implementation of the project «Liquidation of radioactive waste repository on the territory of the military unit of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Tsybuleve village, Kirovohrad region», supported by the NATO Trust Fund and managed by the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA).
During the period from May 2019 to April 2020, the company completed two of the most important and difficult stages of the project. An inspection of the territory of the cemetery on the territory of the military unit was carried out, a site was prepared for carrying out works in compliance with all norms of radioactive waste management, radioactive waste stored in concrete wells was removed and classified, engineering solutions for utilization were agreed with the relevant regulatory bodies, and RAW was transferred to the special storage.
In particular, most of the radioactive waste was packed in containers and placed on a special site located on the territory of the «Buryakivka» radioactive waste disposal point. In addition, low-level RAW was seized from the «Tsybuleve» facility and transferred to a trench-type storage facility at the “Buryakivka” RWDP.
«In the process of implementing this project, our organization, in accordance with the requirements of legislation, permits and technical solutions approved by the State Nuclear Regulation Inspectorate of Ukraine, developed the best solution for waste disposal, transportation and creation of a special site for disposal in the exclusion zone» , - said Vitalii Demianiuk, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of NT-Engineering LLC.
«In total, about 60 tons of radioactive waste was removed and transported. Our team coped with the most difficult stages of the project in the best way, but there is still an equally important stage in the complete rehabilitation of the site where this waste was located, » said Rostislav Maraykin, Director of NT-Engineering LLC.
All measures are carried out in due time with observance of the corresponding level of quality of works, safety of the personnel and environmental objects. The final stage of the project, the restoration of the site to its original condition, has now begun at the Tsybuleve facility. Upon completion, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine will receive an environmentally safe site for further use.
