Containers for transportation and storage of spent ionising radiation sources within the VECTOR II project

The project was implemented in the period from December 2017 to April 2019 and embodied a unique experience for Ukraine in the field of packaging for transportation and storage of ionising radiation sources (IRS). The project complexity and uniqueness consisted in the need to ensure a complete cycle (from the formation of Specifications (requirements) to the transfer of finished tested and certified products to the final consumer) for 5 types of containers and 2 types of additional equipment for handling containers totalling 38 units (29 containers and 9 units of other equipment) in less than 18 months.

During the project, the NT-Engineering specialists developed designs of 5 types of containers according to the Specifications agreed with the End User (Ukrainian State Association “Radon”, State Corporation), 4 of which were certified for transportation (design approval certificate according to PBPRM-2006 and type conformity certificate according to the Technical regulations), and the 5th type was a technological container that was passing certification of conformity. Also, without exception, each unit of containers and additional equipment produced has been certified in accordance with the Specifications.

 

 

The tests confirmed the compliance of the containers with the requirements for strength, tightness reliability and radiation protection properties after mechanical influences.

The results of tests conducted by independent testing laboratories in the presence of representatives of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine and the Certatom Conformity Assessment Body were successful.

After containers and equipment had been supplied to end users (USA “Radon”, SC), practical trainings were organised and conducted for end-user staff (at each enterprise) after the use of new containers and equipment.
