At the second power unit of Zaporizhzhya NPP the experimental operation of risk-informed NPP configuration management has started

The State Inspectorate for Nuclear Regulation of Ukraine has approved a technical decision on the commissioning of risk-informed configuration management at the second power unit of Zaporizhzhya NPP.

The main goal of the project is the possibility of repairs of systems important for safety during the operation of the unit at capacity and reducing the duration of planned and preventive repairs, which will increase the utilization rate of installed capacity (URIC). The implementation of the project will help increase safety and improve economic performance.

The project started at Zaporizhzhya NPP in 2017. During this time, the objects and volumes of optimization have been determined, the model of probabilistic safety analysis has been refined, and the model for the risk monitor has been adjusted.

A conceptual technical solution for maintenance and repair optimization (R&D) has been developed and agreed upon based on risk-informed NPP configuration management, technical solutions for the implementation of risk monitor and RiskWatcher software and hardware at Unit II, safety analysis report and a number of other documents.

There have been done a review of control procedures, repair planning, maintenance schedule and staff training. There were defined the systems on which repair in a condition of work of the power unit on capacity is possible.

Experimental operation of risk-informed NPP configuration management is the final stage of the international part of the project. Industrial operation will be implemented by Zaporizhzhya NPP independently.
